Heritage week in the Boyne Valley 2024

National Heritage Week celebrates Ireland’s cultural, built and natural heritage.

It brings together volunteers, community groups and heritage enthusiasts to share their experience, knowledge, culture and practices. Where better to experience Ireland’s heritage than the Boyne Valley.

We are, after all, the birthplace of Ireland’s Ancient East! 

There are over 30 events happening across the region from the 17th to the 25th of August. Here are our top ones.

Connecting with Martry Mill

Martry Mill

Located just 1km upstream from where the ancient Tailtean Games were held, Martry Mill is brimming with history.

The theme of National Heritage Week 2024 is Connections, Routes and Networks.

The Centre of Food Culture, Boyne Valley are delighted to present the opportunity to connect with Martry Mill, Ireland's Oldest Working Watermill and producer of wholemeal flour, to learn about the milling process and taste a sample of the bread that can be made from flour produced at the mill.

Happening on the 20th of August from 6.30pm to 8pm.

Drogheda Walk and Talk

Drogheda

This walk and talk which will cover aspects of the history of the Laurence Gate, West Gate and Fair Gate Wards of Drogheda including The Municipal Reform Act of 1843, which established these.

Taking place on the 21st of August from 7.30 to 8.30pm.

Girley Bog Walk and Talk

Girley Bog

Join the IPCC for a walk on Girley Bog, where a loop walk connects people to this spectacular raised bog habitat.

Walk out on to the surface of the bog and explore some of the birds and other wildlife that may be found there. 

Happening on the 17th of August from 10am to 12pm.

Heritage Tree Walk in Loughcrew

Heritage Walk

Local arboriculturist Ciaran Keating will lead an informal walk around Loughcrew gardens to talk about trees.

He will be assisted by members of Moylagh Historical Society, who will be able to add historical context to the discussion. 

Happening on the 17th of August from 11am to 1pm.

Medieval Town Wall Kids Dig

Medieval Town Wall Dig

Join the team at the Black Friary Archaeology Site for a Family Fun Day while they search for the Medieval Town Wall of Trim!

They will be running a Kids Dig for those who want to try their hand at excavation on the 20th and 23rd of August from 2-6pm.

Tour of Blackfriary excavations

Blackfriary

Visit the excavations at the Black Friary medieval monastic site in Trim, Co. Meath. The excavations have been running since 2010 led by the Blackfriary Archaeology Field School. 

The tour takes place on the 21st of August from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

Most events for National Heritage week are Free of Charge.

This is a great way to explore and discover the heritage sites and traditions of the Boyne Valley.
