What to Expect at Newgrange

Newgrange Hotel

From 8:30 am, as daylight begins to break, visitors will be allowed on-site. Sunrise is expected at 8:54 am, and the sun’s first rays will pierce through the roof-box above the entrance, gradually illuminating the inner chamber. This phenomenon lasts for just 17 minutes, depending on weather conditions, offering a glimpse into the astronomical and architectural brilliance of the monument’s creators.

After sunrise, around 9:30 am, the lottery winners who have experienced the solstice within the chamber will exit. Visitors waiting outside will then be granted access to the inner chamber in groups of 20. In previous years, everyone waiting outside was able to enter by 11:00 am. Normal guided tours will resume at approximately 12:30 pm, with standard admission fees applying from this point onwards.
