What could be more relaxing than enjoying leisurely walks in the late summer sunshine this August and September in the many beautiful gardens in the Boyne Valley?

The rich heritage of the Boyne Valley is reflected in the gardens, some of which date as far back as the 17th century.

Each garden member also hosts events throughout the year including walks, charity events, plant sales, outdoor theatre and so much more.

So, start planning your trip along the Boyne Valley Garden Trail.

The Cottages Ireland

The Cottages

The Cottages are a dreamy hamlet of 300-year-old thatched cottages, set in large organic flower gardens, by the seaside at Bettystown.  The gardens can be visited by appointment during certain times of the year. Situated on the famous six-mile sandy beach between the villages of Bettystown and Laytown, the picturesque organic gardens, are ideal to visit on a leisurely afternoon.

The Poppy Garden in Milltown, Oldcastle, is a beautiful cottage garden, full of quirky features and whimsical touches. The Poppy Garden just gets better and better as the summer goes on and turns to autumn, with a crescendo reaching its peak with all the autumn colours through October and November.

Loughcrew Estate

The beautiful gardens at the magnificent Loughcrew Estate are a breath-taking spectacle from 17th and 19th century landscape and pleasure gardens. You can take a walk-through centuries of garden and landscape fantasy. The central area of approximately six acres includes a lime avenue, extensive lawns and terraces. The gardens also host a number of events throughout the year!

The Battle of the Boyne, Oldbridge House & Gardens in Drogheda is a beautiful restored walled garden with a sunken Octagon Garden, peach house, apple orchard and paths lined with vibrant herbaceous borders leading to a historic garden exhibition located in the Bothy. There is also free battle site walks and the nearby Boyne Greenway canal and river walks that you can explore on your visit.

Village Garden Julianstown

Julianstown Village Garden

The award-winning Village Garden at Julianstown has been transformed from a derelict 3-acre site to an orchard, woodland, pollinating flowerbeds, soft fruit bushes, herbs and pond with seating scattered throughout. Created by volunteer village residents, it achieved green flag status for 2019-2020. It also hosts regular family events throughout the year.

Herbert’s Garden

Herbert’s Garden in Navan was designed by James McConnell and features a formal beech garden, boxwood parterre and a rose garden with a folly. Enjoy the lime walk, hornbeam arbour and vistas of parkland beautifully laid out around an early 19th century farmhouse. A new walled garden is now open as part of the tour. (Open to individuals and groups by appointment only.)

Killineer House and Gardens

Killineer House and Gardens in Drogheda is a spectacular early 19th century woodland garden with beautiful spring flowering shrubs and trees. Formal paths and terraces lead to a picturesque lake and summerhouse making this a must see on your Boyne Valley garden trail.

Sonairte- the National Ecology Centre Visitor Eco Centre and Gardens

Sonairte

Sonairte is situated in a farm complex of noteworthy historical interest on the banks of the River Nanny near Laytown. Visitors can enjoy a walk in the walled Organic Garden and adjacent Nature Trail with spectacular views of the River Nanny.

 

While you’re in the Boyne Valley, you also might wish to visit some of the superb garden centres including the Boyne Garden Centre & Nursery in Slane; Elmgrove Farm in Gormanston and Ratoath Garden Centre in Ratoath and bring some of the Boyne Valley back to your own garden.
